How does a Tracker Card work?

How does a Tracker Card work?

The SecurityBase Tracker Card uses either Apple Find My or Google Find Hub, two of the biggest crowdsourced Bluetooth networks. This helps you find your valuables quickly and reliably. This is how the technology works.

How is the Tracker Card built?

The SecurityBase Tracker Card is shaped like a credit card, so it fits easily in your wallet or luggage. It has all the built-in technology you need to help find lost items. Some technology in the card;

  • Bluetooth antenna: sends a signal to nearby devices
  • 115mAh rechargeable battery: powers the card for up to 5 months on a single charge
  • Charging coil: allows for wireless charging
  • Activation button: lets you pair the card
  • Speaker: allows you to ring the card to find it when it’s close by
  • Apple Find My chip (for Apple version) or Android Find Hub chip (for Android version): these handle the network communication

The card is IP67 waterproof and can be recharged wirelessly. It doesn’t need GPS, a SIM card, extra batteries, or subscriptions. It works in over 100 countries using Apple or Google networks. It's easy to set up in minutes and doesn't need a special app.

Apple version vs Android version; Which one do you need?

SecurityBase Tracker Cards come in two versions:

  • Apple Find My works with iPhones and the Find My app. Choose the iOS (Apple) Tracker Card if you use an iPhone.
  • Android Find Hub works with Android devices and Google’s Find Hub network. Pick the Android Tracker Card if you have an Android phone.

Both versions operate on the same crowdsourced Bluetooth network principle, with Apple and Google managing their respective networks in the background to ensure high uptime and reliability. All you need to do is open your app to see your card's location.

Some tracker cards on the market claim to be compatible with both Apple and Android. However, while a card may contain both chips, only one network can be active at a time: either Apple Find My or Google Find Hub. A card can't operate on both networks simultaneously.

How the crowdsourced network works

The tracker card regularly broadcasts a Bluetooth signal. Nearby phones, laptops, tablets, or smartwatches with Find Hub or Find My detect the signal and report it anonymously and securely back to Google or Apple's servers (using the phone’s GPS and network connectivity). That location then appears in your app as the card's last known position.

This happens automatically in the background on nearby phones, tablets, laptops, smartwatches or other devices connected to the network. The contributing device owner is unaware, and the data is fully encrypted; only you can see your tracker's location through your own account.

Because location updates occur when a nearby device detects the card's Bluetooth signal, update frequency reflects the environment the card is in. In busy areas such as airports, shopping centres, and city streets, updates are frequent. The card does not require a continuous connection to provide accurate recovery information; a single location ping is often enough to retrieve a lost item.

How often are location updates provided?

Location updates are generated whenever a nearby device detects your card's Bluetooth signal. For an update to be triggered, the device needs to have Find Hub or Find My enabled, be running current Android or iOS software, and be connected to the internet. Most smartphones meet these requirements.

The frequency of these location updates reflects how many compatible devices are around your card. The more phones are nearby, the more frequently your card's Bluetooth signal is detected, resulting in more frequent location updates. Fewer phones nearby mean fewer detections and, therefore, less frequent updates. In busy locations like airports, transit hubs, and city streets, updates are sent every few minutes. In quieter or more remote areas, updates are less frequent, though the network continues to work wherever compatible devices are present.

How reliable are the Tracker Cards?

SecurityBase Tracker Cards are highly reliable because they use two of the world’s largest device networks. Hundreds of millions of Apple and Android devices help power the Find My and Find Hub networks, so coverage is broad and continues to grow.

In cities, suburbs, airports, offices, and other public places, updates are more regular. The tracker cards work best in busy areas (where items are often lost or stolen). If you forget your wallet at a shop, lose a bag at the airport, or have your luggage sent to the wrong place, you’ll receive frequent location updates as your item moves.

In quiet or remote places, updates are less frequent, but the network still works. Even a single location ping can help you find your item. Updates become more frequent as your item moves into busier areas.

Common uses for Tracker Cards

The SecurityBase Tracker Card is designed to help you recover lost items and give you peace of mind. Here are some of the most common ways people use it:

  • Wallets and bags: Put a card in your wallet, handbag, or backpack so you can find it if it’s lost or stolen.
  • Luggage and travel: Place a card in your checked luggage to track it through airports and transit. If your bag is delayed or lost, you can use the location data to help recover it.
  • Vehicles: Keep a card in your car, motorbike, or caravan as a backup tracker to go along with your other security measures.
  • Keys and everyday items: Put a card in a key pouch or document wallet to help you track items you often misplace.

Ready to track what matters?

The SecurityBase Tracker Card is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your valuables.
